After a buying a new place to live, many home and condo buyers want to have friends and family over for the holidays. It’s exciting to host a family gathering for the first time in your new home. It always takes a little planning and a bit of cleaning to have a fun, successful holiday celebration.

For many, a holiday meal wouldn’t be complete without a beautiful, festive table. This inevitably means that the sterling silver flatware will need to be shined. (In search of a reasonably priced sterling silver set of flatware, please see an earlier post.) Sterling can be buffed with Cape Cod Polish or dipped in Hagerty or Tarn-X tarnish remover. All these options work well, but if you are looking to avoid all those nasty chemicals try cleaning the silver the green way! It’s easy and it actually works.

All that is needed is a large pot, a piece of aluminum foil, 1 litre or so of water, 1 tablespoon or so of baking soda and a good pair of tongs. Bring the water, foil and baking soda to a brisk boil. Place the flatware in small batches into the boiling water for at least 10 seconds until it turns clean and shiny. Then pull out the silver with the tongs and place the pieces into a sink full of hot, soapy water. Wash the flatware well and immediately dry the silver with a soft, clean cloth. The results are amazingly fast and it’s achieved without all the toxic chemicals. It’s nice when going green is so wonderfully simple.
